Karen J. Bandeen-Roche, PhD

Dr. Karen Bandeen-Roche is an Associate Professor of Biostatisics at the Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health. She received her PhD from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
As a Brookdale Fellow, Dr. Bandeen-Roche: (1) developed and validated new regression methods for statistical analysis of multiple outcomes collected in longitudinal studies of disability in older persons; (2) developed statistical software that implements the new methods; (3) assessed the relative advantages and disadvantages of the new methods and their existing counterparts, by applying each to important gerontologic data sets. The methodologic advances from this research will enable scientists involved in intervention trials and epidemiologic studies on aging to more efficiently investigate physical functioning and its causes and modifiers. It is hoped that the new methodologies will improve our understanding of what determines functioning and ultimately contribute to the mitigation of disability in older populations.
