Greg A. Sachs, MD, FACD
Dr. Sachs attended the University of Chicago, where he graduated in 1981 with a degree in biology. He graduated Yale University School of Medicine in 1985 and returned to The University of Chicago for his residency in Internal Medicine. In addition to his work in geriatric medicine, Dr. Sachs spent the last two years of his three year fellowship at The University of Chicago’s Center for Clinical Medical Ethics.
Dr. Sachs, MD is the Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, and Professor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. He also serves as a Research Scientist in the IU Center for Aging Research and the Regenstrief Institute. Prior to his move to IU in 2007, he was the founding Chief of the Section of Geriatrics and founding Co-Director of the Center for Comprehensive Care and Research on Memory Disorders (The Memory Center) at the University of Chicago. Dr. Sachs’s research and writing focus is on ethical issues in geriatrics, especially those involving people with dementia. Specific areas included in Dr. Sachs’s work are the ethics of decision making for the care of people with dementia, palliative care in dementia, and the ethics of dementia research.
Dr. Sachs has been the recipient of grants from NIA and AHRQ and the leading foundations funding research in geriatrics (Brookdale, Hartford, Reynolds, Retirement Research Foundation, Alzheimer’s Association), ethics (Greenwall), or palliative care (National Palliative Care Research Center, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation). Dr. Sachs has received the Outstanding Scientific Achievement for Clinical Investigation Award from the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and was a Medical Honoree of the national Alzheimer’s Association. He has taken on leadership roles in several organizations, which include serving on the National Board of Directors of AGS and the editorial board of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
In 2009, Dr. Sachs was elected to Fellowship status in the American College of Physicians and was selected to serve on both the Academic Palliative Medicine Task Force for the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHMP) and a leadership summit between AGS and AAHPM. Dr. Sachs was also named one (of only three) “Top Doctor” in Geriatrics in Indianapolis by Indianapolis Monthly, having been named previously as a “Top Doctor” in Chicago. He has published more than 80 articles in journals, with one of his recent notable papers being an editorial, “Dying from Dementia,” which appeared in the October 15th, 2009 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
